Dustin Pedroia’s face said it all.
The Red Sox, who had chipped back into a game that was tense in every way possible, couldn’t believe they lost Saturday night — on an obstruction call.
Boston appeared to have hope in the bottom of the ninth when another horrible throw down the third base line was collected and fired home in time to catch the runner coming from third, the Cardinals’ Allen Craig. But the moment of joy was quickly lost when Craig was called safe, with umpire Jim Joyce saying Craig had been tripped at third base by Will Middlebrooks.
Red Sox manager John Farrell and the rest of the Red Sox flooded the field as the Cardinals came in to celebrate, but Pedroia’s protestations and every other argument couldn’t change a thing. The Red Sox’ night — including a fine ninth-inning snare by Pedroia to save the game — was lost on a play that was bad baseball from every angle.
