The Pittsburgh Penguins just upped the ante on your standard, backyard wiffle ball game.

The Pens showed some love for their city’s baseball team prior to the Pirates taking on the Reds in Tuesday night’s wild card game. After practice at the CONSOL Energy Center, the Pens took the ice — which had been spray painted to include bases, batter’s boxes and a pitcher’s mound — to partake in a little wiffle ball action.

“[Playing baseball on ice] doesn’t feel anything like it feels on grass,” Sidney Crosby said. “No slides, number one, and it’s pretty tough to play wiffle ball on the ice. I’ve never really done that before.”

The Pens traded in their sweaters for Pirates playoff T-shirts, celebrating their baseball counterpart snapping their 21-year postseason drought. Although Crosby’s team defeated Evgeni Malkin‘s team 3-0 in the creative hybrid game, the Pens captain said they’ll all be on the same side tonight, rooting for their guys in the one-game playoff.

“I think we have a few guys going [to the Pirates game],” Crosby said. “The rest of us will be watching it. I’ll definitely be watching, but from what I’ve heard, a lot of guys will be tuning in.”
