David Ortiz added the 2013 World Series MVP trophy to his Hall of Fame-worthy resume on Wednesday as the Boston Red Sox defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 6-1 in Game 6 to win the franchise’s eighth championship.
The 37-year-old designated hitter was the obvious choice to win the award after finishing the series with an astounding .688 batting average, seven runs, 11 hits, two home runs, six RBIs, seven walks and .760 OBP.

Ortiz’s nine career World Series extra-base hits are a Red Sox record, and he increased his career World Series RBI total to 14, which ties him with Dwight Evans for the most in club history. Without question, he was easily the most dominant and consistent hitter in the Red Sox lineup, which faced one of the toughest pitching rotations and bullpens in baseball during the World Series

At one point in the series, Ortiz had reached safely in nine straight plate appearances, and when the Cardinals finally started to walk Ortiz consistently, it was too late.

One moment where Ortiz had a tremendous impact on the team without making a mark on the stat sheet was when he held a team meeting in the dugout with the Red Sox trailing in Game 4. The Sox were down 2-1 in the series and Ortiz’s leadership and bat sparked a rally, helping Boston tie the series and avoid a 3-1 hole.
Ortiz is the only player who has been part of all three of Boston’s titles in the 21st century (2004, 2007, 2013), and during the regular season, he tied Ted Williams‘ team record with his seventh season of at least 30 home runs and 100 RBIs in a Red Sox uniform.
