The Red Sox got off to a rough start in their first game on enemy turf, beginning Game 3 of the World Series in St. Louis by going down two runs behind some shaky pitching from Jake Peavy.
But Boston pushed through and overcame two different two-run deficits to get to a 4-4 game in the ninth. That’s when things got really ugly.
After seeing Game 2 spoiled by a poor throwing choice from behind home plate by pitcher Craig Breslow, the Sox saw another close game slip away when catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia made an ill-advised throw to third base after the Red Sox recorded the second out in the bottom of the ninth inning. The throw got away from Will Middlebrooks at third, and although the ball was corralled and fired home soon enough, the runner was called safe after the umpire ruled he was delayed because Middlebrooks obstructed his path.
St. Louis won a game it had controlled for good portions of the evening, 5-4, putting itself up 2-1 in the series on a moment that will get plenty of attention before Game 4 starts Sunday night.
The play will likely overshadow strong performances for other members of the Red Sox, such as Daniel Nava, who finally got another postseason nod and responded by driving in two runs, and Xander Bogaerts, who had two hits and a pivotal RBI.
