Update, 5:35 p.m. ET: Adrian Peterson’s two-year-old son has died, police confirmed to Minnesota Star-Tribune columnist Chip Scoggins.

Update, 11:46 a.m. ET: TMZ is now reporting that according to “multiple sources with direct knowledge of the situation,” the injured child is Peterson’s son, “but it’s not Adrian Peterson Jr.”

Pro Football Talk is also reporting that it is his son while other outlets are reporting it isn’t his son.

The report adds that police have told the media that “Patterson allegedly struck the child’s mother with a 3-foot long metal construction bar. She sustained one defensive injury to her arm and a cut to the face. She refused medical attention.”

Adrian Peterson left the Vikings on Thursday to do deal with a “tragic” personal situation. We may now know why.

Peterson’s 2-year-old son, Adrian Peterson Jr., is in critical condition after allegedly being “severely” beaten by a man his mother was dating, according to TMZ. Joseph Patterson was arrested on charges of aggravated felony assault and battery of an infant.

The young boy suffered “severe head injuries.” Peterson Jr. also had “choking injuries” according to the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. Patterson was the only person home with the young boy. Patterson, Peterson Jr. and the boy’s mother had recently moved to Sioux Falls, S.D.
