Mike Pouncey was handed a loss and some papers on Sunday afternoon.
Less than an hour after New England defeated the Dolphins in Foxboro, the Massachusetts State Police served the Miami center with a grand jury subpoena, according to Sports Illustrated’s Pete Thamel and Greg Bedard.
The report states that the subpoena is related to the investigation of Aaron Hernadez, who was college teammates with Pouncey at the University of Florida. Police are reportedly focusing on Hernandez’s potential involvement in interstate gun trafficking in at least three states: Massachusetts, New York and Florida.
The extent of Pouncey’s involvement with the allegations is unknown at this point in time, but Sports Illustrated claims that “police are focusing on multiple transactions that involve him and Hernandez.”
“Organizationally, we do not have a comment,” said Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene. “And Mike Pouncey does not have a comment.”
SI explains that the subpoena does not mean that Pouncey has been or will be charged with a crime, but rather that authorities believe he can help advance the case against Hernandez.
After the game, two Massachusetts state police officers approached Pouncey, who was reportedly confused upon receiving the paperwork, as one officer explained, “It’s about a grand jury investigation.” The same officer later said, “Make sure you arrive.”
Pouncey and his twin brother Maurkice, who plays for the Steelers, received some attention in July when they were spotted wearing “Free Hernandez” hats at a nightclub. Maurkice issued a public apology for the inappropriate attire, with his brother declining the chance to apologize and refusing to speak about the incident. While at the University of Florida, the Pouncey brothers lived with Hernandez for a period of time.
In September, Hernandez was indicted and pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and five other weapons-related charges.
