Jermichael FinleyIt’s never good news when a football player takes a hit up high and has to be stretchered off the field. More often than not, thankfully, the injury is somewhat minor, at least when you think about how scary the actual play and medical care looked.

So when Jermichael Finley lay on the Lambeau Field grass Sunday after taking a hit to the head, you wouldn’t be alone if you thought the Packers tight end would eventually be OK. But there are the rare occasions where players are seriously injured, and Finley might fall into that category.

ESPN reported Monday morning that Finley is in the hospital and he’s in an intensive care unit with a neck injury. That’s the only information available so far. Finley’s agent, Blake Baratz, tweeted Sunday night his appreciation for the words of support for his client, but he added “football doesn’t matter right now.”

Finley took a shot from Tashaun Gipson in the fourth quarter of the Packers’ win over the Cleveland Browns. He lay motionless on the grass before medical personnel attended to him and eventually carted him off the field. The Packers tweeted shortly after the injury that Finley had suffered a neck injury but had feeling in his extremities.

“He couldn’t move at the time,” backup tight end Andrew Quarless said. “So I just told him, just stay here, just lay here, don’t move.”

Finley also suffered a concussion earlier this season.
