Matt Flynn is the ultimate con artist. He’s made more than $14 million over the past two seasons. Yet somehow the once heavily sought-after free agent is already back on the market.
Flynn, who originally signed a three-year, $26 million deal with the Seahawks before the 2012 season, has started just one game between two teams over the last season-plus. On Monday, the Raiders decided they had seen enough and decided to release the 28-year-old quarterback, according to Sports Illustrated’s Jim Trotter.
The Raiders traded a fifth-round pick in exchange for Flynn this offseason with the expectation that he would be their starting quarterback. Third-year quarterback Terrelle Pryor put up a strong fight in training camp, though, beating out Flynn for the starting job, Pryor hasn’t looked back, leading the Raiders to a 2-2 record in games that he’s started this season.
Flynn started one game for the Raiders this season, while Pryor recovered from a concussion in Week 4, but he struggled to create the same sort of rhythm on offense, throwing for 227 yards, one touchdown and a pick six in a 24-14 loss to the Redskins.
