Max ScherzerThe Detroit Tigers are facing elimination on Tuesday in Game 4 of the ALDS against the Oakland Athletics, but despite the importance of this matchup, manager Jim Leyland has opted not to pitch Game 1 winner Max Scherzer.

Instead, Doug Fister has taken the mound with the Tigers’ season on the line.

His last outing against the Athletics at Comerica Park was in August, when he gave up seven earned runs in only five innings.

Scherzer, who is considered by many as the 2013 AL Cy Young Award favorite primarily because of his 21-3 regular-season record, might be available for an inning or two out of the bullpen on Tuesday, according to Danny Knobler of CBS Sports.

The 29-year-old has made just one relief appearance in his postseason career.
