If you’ve ever watched a Patriots game, then you know Tom Brady hates to lose. He likes losing to the Jets even less.
The Patriots lost to the Jets for the first time in three years on Sunday, and Brady was pretty upset about it afterward. He didn’t throw a temper tantrum or flip out in his postgame interview, but he admitted how much it sucked.
“Losing sucks and especially to the Jets, so I’m going to go out there and try to have my best week this week,” Brady said on WEEI’s Dennis and Callahan on Monday. “It’s a frustrating day. It’s a frustrating day losing. But hopefully we can learn from it and be a lot better this week.”
The focus of the loss surrounds a controversial penalty call on a Jets field goal in overtime, but Brady and the offense didn’t do anything before then to change their fortunes either. Brady completed fewer than 50 percent of his passes (22 of 46) for the third time this season — the first time he’s had three games under 50 percent in a season during his career — and the offense managed to convert just 1 of 12 third downs in the 30-27 loss.
Brady is well aware of the offensive deficiencies, and he was more than willing to bear the blame for them.
“There’s not really one thing,” Brady said of the mistakes immediately after halftime. “It’s just a lack of overall execution in the run game, the pass game. You can’t go through quarters and do that. We have to be consistent, and we have to play consistently throughout the game. If you have quarters where you don’t really produce anything on offense, you really leave the defense out to dry with the three-and-outs that we had, certainly the interception returned for a touchdown, the three-and-out following that and the three-and-out following that. You really need to be perfect after that. We were trying. We just didn’t make enough plays to overcome our difficulties in the third quarter.”
The Patriots drop to 5-2 on the season, but, fortunately for Brady, they won’t have to face the Jets again this season — barring an unlikely meeting in the playoffs.
