“The Answer” will soon share a space with “The Doctor,” “The Big Dipper” and “The Kangaroo Kid” for all time.
In a move that should surprise no one, the Philadelphia 76ers have announced that they will retire Allen Iverson‘s jersey number. Iverson’s No. 3 will join Julius Erving‘s No. 6, Wilt Chamberlain‘s No. 13 and Billy Cunningham‘s No. 32 — as well as the digits worn by Hal Greer, Mo Cheeks, Charles Barkley and Bobby Jones — in the rafters of the Wells Fargo Center during a ceremony at halftime of the Sixers’ game against Washington on March 1.
“Allen Iverson is, without question, one of the most iconic players to ever wear the Sixers uniform,” Sixers CEO Scott O’Neil said in a statement. “Allen left everything out on the court and no one could ever question his heart — he was relentless, fearless and pound-for-pound was one of the greatest to ever play the game.”
Iverson won four scoring titles and won the NBA Most Valuable Player award in 2000-01 while leading the Sixers to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Lakers in five games. He played for the Nuggets, Pistons and Grizzlies after being traded away from Philadelphia in 2006, but returned to the Sixers for a 25-game stint before finishing his career in 2010.
