Astrodome’s Impending Demolition Puts It Among Top 10 Former Baseball Parks, Stadiums (Photos)

With voters deciding not to pass a $217 million referendum to renovate the Astrodome into an event and convention center, the domed haven that was once the future of baseball now appears to be destined for the long list of historic baseball palaces that have met their end.

Like many of the other landmark parks, the Astrodome has fallen into disrepair, and what was once incredibly innovative (a fully air-conditioned sports complex!) is now sorely outdated and expensive to keep up. The Astrodome has been vacant for several years now, and with no sports teams — and now, no convention-goers — stepping up to use it, it appears the Astrodome may be fated to live on only in photos (albeit not sepia tone, like most of the list’s other entrants).

While the Astrodome certainly had many quirky features that set it apart, including its famed Astroturf, it’s the stadium’s historical significance that gets it onto the list of the game’s best-known former parks, from the Yankees’ early playing place at the Polo Grounds to the House That Ruth Built that hosted 26 championships, with more domes, ivy-covered walls and legendary stadiums in between.
