How is it that muffed kicks and punts always seem to result in big returns?
That was the case again in suburban Connecticut last Friday, when Danbury High School’s Elijah Duffy bobbled a kick return before scooping up the ball and embarking on an 86-yard journey to the end zone. Duffy appeared to be bottled up near the left sideline after avoiding the initial would-be tackler, but he refused to go down, sidestepping to gain separation through the crowd and taking off up the sideline when a seam emerged.
“That was an amazing play by Duffy, which at the time, gave us a lift,” Danbury coach Dan Donovan told the Greenwich Time. “He was near the sideline and we were telling him to go out of bounds, but he turned on the jets.”
Unfortunately for Duffy and Donovan, Danbury was unable to contain Greenwich High running back Austin Longi, who rushed for 272 yards and scored seven touchdowns in a 57-29 win for the visiting Cardinals.
