Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Max Scherzer was named the 2013 AL Cy Young Award winner on Wednesday.
Scherzer was the top candidate for the award, and to no one’s surprise he received 28 of 30 first-place votes. Yu Darvish of the Texas Rangers and Hisashi Iwakuma of the Seattle Mariners finished second and third, respectively.
The 29-year-old Detroit ace was the only 20-game winner in the AL with a 21-3 record. He posted 24o strikeouts (second-most in majors), a 2.90 ERA and a league-leading 0.97 WHIP. He also becomes the second Tigers pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in the last three seasons (Justin Verlander won it in 2011).
Scherzer’s consistently strong performance from the mound was a major reason why the Tigers won their third straight AL Central Division title in 2013.
