Rudy JohnsonDefenses have had a hard time stopping Winston-Salem State quarterback Rudy Johnson this season, but Virginia State was willing to do anything to shut him down, including beating him to a pulp.

Johnson was 9-0 as a starter this season and looking toward the CIAA conference championship game against Virginia State to further cement his legacy at the school. During the CIAA football banquet on Friday afternoon, though, some Virginia State players had some other ideas in mind.

Five members of the Virginia State football team attacked Johnson in a bathroom at Winston-Salem’s campus on Friday, according to the Winston-Salem Journal. The quarterback was beaten badly by the opposing players and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.

“We don’t know a lot of what happened but we do know our starting quarterback, Rudy Johnson, was beaten up,” said Winston-Salem State Chancellor Donald Reaves. “And he didn’t beat himself up.”

Lamont Darnell Britt, 22, a junior running back for Virginia State was arrested in connection with the fight by Winston-Salem State University police,  according to WGHP-TV in Winston-Salem. He was charged with misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury and held on $750 bond.

The championship game was scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday. CIAA officials have since decided to cancel the game, given the extenuating circumstances stemming from the fight.
