Carolina’s Ryan Murphy will not miss any games as a result of his low hit on Rangers winger Derek Dorsett over the weekend, but he will be a bit lighter in the wallet.
The NHL fined Murphy $2,213.68 on Monday — the maximum permitted under the collective bargaining agreement — for his open-ice hit below the knees that send Dorsett flipping headfirst to the ice. Dorsett, who came to New York from Columbus in the offseason, called the hit “dirty,” and new Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault was also quick to voice his disapproval with Murphy’s actions.
“I mean, in my opinion, that’s real dangerous,” Vigneault said after Saturday’s game, according to ESPN.com’s Katie Strang. “Any time you’re going for knees, you’re looking at career-ending injuries here.
“That was borderline very, very dangerous.”
