Spencer Hawes, Kelly OlynykKelly Olynyk spoke briefly before Friday’s Celtics game about the status of his sprained ankle, which he injured on Nov. 22 against Indiana.

“It’s getting better every day,” Olynyk began, “definitely trending in the right direction.”

The rookie hasn’t taken the court over the past week, but suggested as soon as he’s able to make a difference he’ll be back playing with his teammates.

“I’m not sure [on a return date]. [I] just keep working on it, keep trying to improve it. Just want to make sure I’m ready to go and can help the team, but you don’t want to be out there injured and be a detriment. I’ve been doing everything you can, really.”

Olynyk also said he’d never suffered an ankle sprain so severe before, but was making the most of the different perspective.

“Not too severe,” he said. “Maybe one three or four years ago on the [Canadian] national team.

“It sucks. Every player wants to play and help your team. Physically not being able to [play] is tough,” he said. “You see the game from a different perspective, more as a whole from start to finish rather than trying to analyze it too much. It’s a bigger picture from an outside view.”
