On Monday, 10 former National League Hockey players filed a class-action lawsuit against the league, claiming that the league did not do enough to protect players from concussions and that the NHL also concealed information about the risks of brain injuries.
Within 48 hours of the suit being filed, however, the number of plaintiffs has jumped from 10 to over 200 former players. The number of NHLers involved in the case continues to grow at a rapid rate, and the lawyers involved in the suit expect the number to keep rising, according to Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston.
Somewhat mirroring the class-action suit the NFL was involved in just three months ago in which the league agreed to pay $765 million to settle thousands of former players lawsuits over head injuries, Johnson reports that the NHL players are seeking “financial damages along with medical monitoring for the players’ injuries.”
