The Philadelphia Flyers went into Friday night’s matchup against the Washington Capitals at the bottom of the Metropolitan Division standings with a 3-8 record.

They badly needed a win, but the Flyers were dominated on home ice in a 7-0 loss to a Capitals team that didn’t have leading goal scorer and reigning Hart Trophy winner Alexander Ovechkin because of an injury.

But the outcome of the game wasn’t the only embarrassing result for Philadelphia. Flyers goaltender Ray Emery, who allowed four goals on just 15 shots after replacing starter Steve Mason in the second period, was shockingly named the third star of the game by the home media. In addition to his poor performance, which included a .733 save percentage and 29 PIM, Emery was ejected after skating to the other end of the ice to join a line brawl in the third period that included a bout between him and Capitals goalie Braden Holtby, despite the fact that the Washington netminder didn’t want to drop the gloves.

Emery’s actions drew strong criticisms from the hockey media, including Sportsnet’s Daren Millard.
