The Tampa Bay Lightning lost their best player to a broken tibia on Monday afternoon when superstar center Steven Stamkos collided with a goal post during the second period of his team’s game against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden.

Stamkos had to be taken off the ice in a stretcher and went to a local hospital for X-rays. Aaron Ward reports that the sniper will require surgery. Recovery time is usually a few months for this type of injury, and as one of the most dedicated players in regard to offseason fitness training, expect Stamkos to put a strong effort into returning as soon as possible.
The 23-year-old forward entered the day tied for the league lead in scoring with 23 points, and he ranks tied for first in goals scored with 14. The Lightning sit atop the Eastern Conference standings with 24 points (12-5-0) despite their 3-0 loss in Boston on Monday.
