Jason KiddBrooklyn Nets head coach Jason Kidd didn’t have any timeouts with less than 10 seconds remaining in his team’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night.

In the middle of a difficult situation, Kidd came up with a plan to stall the game. He was holding a cup of soda and appeared to ask one of his players to bump into him. Tyshawn Taylor walked over to his coach, the two collided, and Kidd’s soda spilled onto the floor, which gave him enough time to draw up a final play for the Nets.

As one of the best point guards of all time, Kidd showed an impressive level of intelligence on the court. He’s also brought that savvy to his coaching role, as evidenced by his clever idea to get Brooklyn another timeout.

However, his actions were not well-received by the league office, and according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, the first-year coach is going to receive a five-figure fine for his spill.

Despite Kidd’s efforts, the Nets lost 99-94, dropping their record to 4-11. Brooklyn is tied with the Cleveland Cavaliers for the third-worst record in the Eastern Conference.
