The Packers are bringing old friend Matt Flynn in for a workout on Monday after reaching out to him to gauge interest in a possible return late last week, according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Aaron Rodgers is expected to miss at least a few more weeks recovering from a fractured collarbone, and backup Seneca Wallace, who had to leave Sunday’s game with a groin injury, is yet to have a timetable for his return.
Flynn, 28, spent four seasons backing up Aaron Rodgers to begin his NFL career before signing a lucrative contract with the Seattle Seahawks ahead of the 2012 season. Flynn was beaten out by then-rookie Russell Wilson for the Seahawks’ starting job last season, though, and he spent just five weeks this season on the Raiders’ roster, starting one game, before being released. He also had a brief spell with the Buffalo Bills, not taking a snap with the team, before being released last week.
Flynn built a reputation as a quality backup quarterback during his final two seasons with the Packers, starting two games over his final two seasons. His first start was against the Patriots in 2010, and he threw for 251 yards and three touchdowns in a close loss. His second and final start with the team came in Week 17 in 2011, with Flynn airing it out for 480 yards and six touchdowns in a tight win over the Lions.
Flynn is already well versed in the Packers’ offense, which is a major factor in the team’s interest. He could also help tutor Tolzien, who has already been announced as the starter for Sunday’s game with the Giants, to pick up the offense quicker.
