The Rangers might have additional plans in mind.
The initial thought in the wake of Wednesday’s Ian Kinsler-for-Prince Fielder swap was that the Rangers would proceed with a middle infield of Elvis Andrus and Jurickson Profar. But according to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, Texas is still open to trading either Andrus or Profar if the right deal comes along.
The phrase “right deal” is tricky. Theoretically, shouldn’t anyone and everyone be available for the “right deal?” That’s why it’s the “right deal.” Anyway, to avoid splitting too many hairs, let’s focus on the possibilities, which, according to Rosenthal, involve the Cardinals and Rays.
The Cardinals are seemingly in the market for a shortstop, so while there’s been speculation regarding free-agent Stephen Drew and Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, perhaps it’s possible that the Rangers could deal one of their middle infielders if the dominoes fall a certain way.
In the case of the Rays, it’s logical to think that any talks involving Andrus or Profar would center on Tampa ace David Price. There’s been talk that the Rays might consider trading Price, who will be eligible for free agency following the 2015 season, although it’ll likely take a big haul to pry the lefty away from Tampa Bay.
As is always the case with such rumors, grab a grain of salt. It’s still interesting to consider the possibilities for Texas, though, mainly because there are so many of them at this point.
