Could Wednesday’s blockbuster be a precursor to bigger things this winter?
While it’s entirely possible that the Tigers will use the money that they saved by dealing away Prince Fielder to sign Max Scherzer and/or Miguel Cabrera to new deals, there’s also a chance that they could dip into the free-agent market this offseason. If Detroit takes the latter route, it could involve moving another player currently on the roster.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Tigers are listening to offers for center fielder Austin Jackson. One option, of course, is to keep Jackson, who has spent the last four seasons in Detroit. But another would be to deal Jackson and then pursue a free agent, like, say, Jacoby Ellsbury.
Although there’s not much linking Ellsbury to Detroit at this point, Nightengale tosses out a pursuit by the Tigers as one potential scenario should they trade away Jackson, who struggled mightily in the postseason before eventually being dropped down in the lineup by Jim Leyland.
