Red Sox fans might see Stephen Drew cross over to the dark side this winter.
According to CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman, the Yankees are pursuing Drew as they look to bolster their infield. The Yankees reportedly signed shortstop Brendan Ryan, who will provide insurance for Derek Jeter, but the club apparently still has interest in Drew.
Drew hit .253 with 13 homers and 67 RBIs in 2013 before struggling mightily in the postseason. The 30-year-old provided excellent defense throughout the Red Sox’ World Series run, though, and his all-around game is believed to be generating plenty of interest on the open market.
Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said recently that he isn’t closing the door on the possibility of re-signing Drew. However, Drew is looking for a multiyear deal and might eventually land a more lucrative contract elsewhere, in which case the Red Sox would obtain a draft pick because they already offered the shortstop a $14.1 million qualifying offer.
