Roberto Luongo made some controversial comments after Game 5 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Final, telling reporters that the goal Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas allowed in the Canucks’ 1-0 win would have been an “easy save for me.”

Before catching the team flight for Game 6 in Boston, Luongo made another regrettable comment, saying “I’ve been pumping [Thomas’] tires ever since the series started and I haven’t heard one nice thing he had to say about me, so that’s the way it is.”

Thomas responded to these comments by saying, “I didn’t realize it was my job to pump his tires.”

We may never how much the “pumping tires” comment motivated Thomas’ ahead of his Game 7 shutout that helped the Bruins capture their first championship in 39 years, but Luongo wasn’t afraid to joke about the matter one day prior to his first game against Thomas since that Cup Final clincher.

Two years after a memorable Cup Final, Luongo remains the starting goaltender in Vancouver, while Thomas is backstopping the Florida Panthers following a yearlong absence from the NHL.

The two goalies are expected to start Tuesday’s game, but the matchup isn’t official yet.
