Ben Cherington got what Brian Cashman — and every other general manager — wanted. But Cashman isn’t bitter about the Red Sox’ World Series victory, even if he wishes it was his Yankees who ended the season on top.
“I’ll see him in about a week at the GM meetings [which start Nov. 11]. I can tell him then,” Cashman said when asked if he planned to congratulate Cherington by phone, according to the New York Daily News.
Cashman reportedly pointed out that Cherington won’t have much time to celebrate the Red Sox’ World Series win. With free agency, the winter meetings and various other offseason obligations rapidly approaching, it won’t be long before Cherington really digs his heels in to construct what he hopes is the next championship Red Sox team.
“As GM, you don’t have time to enjoy it long,” Cashman reportedly said. “The work starts again right away.”
The Red Sox’ World Series win marks Cherington’s first as general manager. Cherington became the general manager of the Red Sox following the 2011 season, as former Boston GM Theo Epstein became the president of the Cubs. Cashman, whose Yankees finished 85-77 and tied for third place in the AL East, has won five titles since becoming New York’s general manager in 1998.
“It’s pride,” Cashman reportedly said of winning the World Series as GM. “It’s immense pride and rightfully so.”
Cashman also reportedly sent Cherington a text prior to the start of this year’s World Series that said “that I was rooting for them and thought they were the team to beat.”
