Bill Cowher hasn’t coached in the NFL since 2006, but that might not stop the Redskins from signing the former Pittsburgh Steelers coach to take over in Washington.
With Mike Shanahan out, Zac Boyer of The Washington Times put together an interesting list of potential ‘Skins head-coaching candidates — a list that includes Cowher, who’s currently a studio analyst for CBS’s The NFL Today, as well as former Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt and current Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden.
Boyer notes that the Redskins position is attractive “for a variety of reasons,” including “the opportunity to work with quarterback Robert Griffin III” and alongside an owner “who will be active in free agency.”
Cowher, who played in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s, was the Steelers’ head coach from 1992 to 2006. It was his only head-coaching job in the NFL, as he served as the special teams and secondary coach for the Browns and defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs before taking the gig in Steel City.
In addition to Cowher, Whisenhunt and Gruden, Boyer lists Redskins defensive backs coach Raheem Morris, Baylor head coach Art Briles, former Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith and current San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman, among others possible candidates, to replace Shanahan.
