The Bruins’ injury woes show no signs of letting up, which means B’s general manager Peter Chiarelli is probably speaking to the folks in Providence more than he is his own family at this rate.
Chiarelli and the Boston front office were on the horn again with their American Hockey League affiliate as they returned to Boston from Vancouver, as the Bruins recalled forward Craig Cunningham from Providence on an emergency basis. Cunningham was on the ice Monday morning when the Bruins practiced at Ristuccia Arena in Wilmington, Mass.
It’s still unclear whether Cunningham has been recalled to be inserted into the lineup Tuesday against Calgary or if the 23-year-old has been called up as the 13th forward. First-line winger Jarome Iginla missed Monday’s practice, but his status is unknown for Tuesday’s game. Iginla appeared to injure his finger Saturday night in Vancouver. He suffered the injury in a first period fight with Ryan Kesler and missed the rest of the period. He somehow was able to return for the second, however, and played the rest of the game.
Cunningham would be making his NHL debut if he were to be inserted into the lineup Tuesday night. He has scored at least 20 goals in his two full seasons with Providence and has 9-5-14 totals through 27 games with the P-Bruins this season. Cunningham joins Ryan Spooner, Matt Fraser and Nick Johnson as Bruins forwards who have been recalled by the big club in the last two weeks.
