Carmelo AnthonySome people have called LeBron James and Chris Bosh traitors for joining forces with Dwyane Wade on the Heat. Others have called them lazy for taking the easy route to a championship.

Carmelo Anthony just calls them smart.

In an ominous sign for the Knicks, Anthony told Ahmad Rashad in an interview for NBA TV that James and Bosh made the “smart” move to maneuver their way to Miami three years ago. Anthony is eligible for free agency after this season, and he has said he will test the market.

“They were smart,” Anthony said. “I think it’s smart. It was their choice.”

Anthony backed up a bit to keep Knicks fans from panicking, claiming that he was only talking about James and Bosh in their own circumstances, not his own.

“I’m not saying I want to go somewhere else,” he said. “When I first got to New York, I always told myself it would be a three to 3 1/2-year plan just to rebuild. I knew we took a step backward as an organization for me to get here, so we had to rebuild.”

If this is what the Knicks call rebuilding, they are going about it in a weird way. They won 54 games last season but are just 8-18 through Sunday, and are some $15 million over the luxury tax line. They could also have just one first-round pick over the next three years, depending on how things fall with the Nuggets and Raptors.
