Da state of Illinois has announced that da coach will be getting his own day.
Gov. Pat Quinn‘s office declared Monday “Mike Ditka Day” in honor of the legendary Bears player and coach, who is having his No. 89 jersey retired during halftime of Monday night’s game against the Cowboys.
The legendary tight end will become only the 14th player in franchise history to have his number retired.
Ditka was drafted by the Bears in 1961 and in six seasons with Chicago, he was a five-time Pro Bowler and named NFL Rookie of the Year after catching 56 passes for 1,076 yards and 12 touchdowns. Ditka finished out his playing days with the Eagles and Cowboys before being named the Bears head coach in 1982. At the helm, Ditka complied a 106-62 record in Chicago and led the Bears to their Super Bowl XX championship in 1985.
In a statement, Quinn said “Da Coach” ”molded and guided arguably the best football team,” referring to the 1985 Super Bowl champs and he called Ditka “the greatest tight end of all time.”
