Joe Torre may have had his baseball success in New York, but the former Yankees manager had his eyes on New England’s hooded football master when looking for inspiration.
Torre called Bill Belichick one of his influences when speaking Monday about his election to the Baseball Hall of Fame. While Torre won his four World Series in five years with the Yankees before Belichick found his own coaching success with the Patriots, Torre said Belichick’s insight helped him as a manager.

Belichick wasn’t the only coach who got a hat tip from Torre.

Torre logged a 2,326-1,997 record over his Major League Baseball managerial career, good for fifth all-time. His most successful years were with the Yankees, who were the epitome of Belichick’s quote in winning four World Series in the late 1990s with great teams while struggling in Torre’s later years behind a revolving door of high-priced free agents, including Alex Rodriguez.
