The NFL’s new safety regulations have caused many defenders to open up their checkbooks this season. On Friday, another player was added to that list.
Lions linebacker DeAndre Levy was handed down a $15,750 fine by the NFL for his hit on Packers tight end Ryan Taylor on Thanksgiving, according to Pro Football Talk. Levy, who leads the NFL in interceptions (six), was flagged for the hit on a “defenseless receiver” during the game, but afterward he called the league a “joke” for calling such a penalty.
âItâs a joke, man,â Levy told the Detroit News of the hit. âThe NFLâs becoming a joke with some of these calls.â
Levy is the 15th Lions player to be fined this year, raising Detroit’s league-leading fine total to $267,500 on the season. Aside from the questionable penalty, Levy is enjoying a major breakout season. He is on track to set new career highs in tackles (currently 95), tackles for loss (seven) and he leads the NFL in interceptions with six.
The NFL has now docked players more than $10 million in either straight fines or suspensions this season.
