Vincent Kompany arguably is the best defender in the Premier League, but he undermined that reputation by scoring two goals Saturday.

Kompany gave Manchester City a 2-0 lead against Fulham when he tapped in a rebound in the 43rd minute. It was his first goal of the season and the day, but there was more to come for the halftime hero.

With his team leading 2-1 in the 70th minute, Kompany struck again. The only problem was that he scored against his own team.

Fulham’s Sascha Riether sent an innocent-looking cross into the City penalty area, and Kompany arrived first. The City captain tried to eliminate what little danger Riether’s pass posed, but he shanked his clearance quite horribly. Despite facing the sideline, Kompany somehow managed to kick the ball backward, sending it spinning over goalkeeper Joe Hart‘s head and into the goal.

City’s aptly named winger, Jesus Navas, couldn’t manage to save Kompany’s own goal, but he scored in the 78th minute to help ease Kompany’s pain and win the game for City. James Milner then scored in the 83rd minute to complete the 4-2 win.

A defender of Kompany’s lofty standard is allowed to have a bad day at the office, and even City fans can laugh at this calamity of a clearance.
