The Denver Broncos’ offense has been on a record-setting pace all season, with Peyton Manning at the helm of the historic charge. On Sunday, Manning claimed some more history for him and his team.
One week after he eclipsed Tom Brady’s single-season passing touchdown record, Manning broke yet another mark. This time, he took down Drew Brees‘ single-season passing yardage record.
Entering Week 17, Manning needed to throw for 265 yards to surpass Brees’Â mark of 5,476, set in 2011. Manning managed to reach that total in the first half, throwing for 266 yards and four touchdowns and setting the new mark on a 5-yard TD pass to Demaryius Thomas. Manning didn’t play in the second half, with the game against the Oakland Raiders easily in hand.
While Manning enjoyed some more history, so did the Broncos’ offense. With 31 first-half points, the Broncos set a new NFL record for points in a season, breaking the 2007 New England Patriots’ mark of 589. Denver entered the week with 572 points, needing just 18 to set the record, and became the first team to eclipse 600 points in a season.
Kicker Matt Prater joined the assault on the record books, setting a new high for extra points in a season with 75. He passed Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski‘s single-season mark of 74.
