Peyton Manning‘s 2013 season was full of records, but one of them might be in jeopardy only one day after he set it.
The Denver Broncos quarterback made history again Sunday, when he eclipsed Drew Brees’ NFL single-season passing yardage record by 1. Manning only needed one half to surpass Brees’ mark, throwing for 266 yards to give him 5,477 on the season, but it turns out he might have needed the second half as well.
Sources told ESPN that the NFL is reviewing a first-quarter play in which Manning threw what was recorded as a 7-yard pass to Eric Decker. However, in one camera angle, it appears Manning threw the ball backward, which would make it a lateral, meaning Decker should be credited with a 7-yard run, not a 7-yard reception. Another camera angle, though, shows Decker receiving the ball slightly in front of Manning.
If the league reverses the call, Manning will finish the season 6 yards shy of the record. He didn’t play in the second half of the Broncos’ 34-14 win over the Oakland Raiders.
Manning won’t be without historic feats if the play is ruled a run. He shattered Tom Brady‘s single-season passing touchdown record in Week 16 and finished the regular season with a league-record 55 TD tosses.
