The Holy War may be coming to one of baseball’s most storied cathedrals.
Boston College and Notre Dame are in “serious negotiations” to play a football game at Fenway Park, according to The Boston Globe.
The home of the Red Sox has hosted soccer and hockey in recent years — the BC and Notre Dame icemen will face off at Frozen Fenway on Jan. 4 — but football has not been played at the ballpark in nearly half a century.
The Patriots played six seasons at Fenway in the 1960s before moving to Foxboro in 1971.
Though the series took a year off this season, BC-Notre Dame was one of college football’s most compelling rivalries throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Ten of the teams’ last 18 meetings have been decided by 10 points or fewer, beginning with BC’s historic 41-39 upset of the top-ranked Fighting Irish in South Bend in 1993.
Notre Dame, which leads the all-time series 13-9, is on a four-game winning streak against the Eagles, but BC won each of the previous six meetings before that.
The schools are not scheduled to play each other next football season, meaning the earliest a Fenway game could be played would be in 2015.
