Nets fans are clamoring for a coaching change, and that’s exactly what they’ve gotten — only not the one they were hoping for.
Lawrence Frank, the Nets’ assistant coach and so-called defensive coordinator, has been “reassigned,” head coach Jason Kidd told reporters before Tuesday’s game. Frank will no longer be allowed on the Nets’ bench or play an active role in practices, the New York Daily News reports.
Kidd cited “different philosophies,” according to the Daily News, which may or may not refer to Frank’s opinion of intentionally spilling soft drinks onto the court.
Frank, widely regarded as one of the top X’s and O’s minds among NBA assistants, was an assistant with the Celtics under Doc Rivers during the 2010-11 season. Frank and John Welch served as Kidd’s top assistants, with Frank focusing on defense and Welch primarily coaching the Nets’ offense.
There were concerns about “philosophical differences” between Kidd and Frank earlier this season, but a source told ESPN.com a week ago that “they’re fine.”
