Changes are being made in the nation’s capital, and RG3 can’t be too happy about them.
After enduring another putrid performance on Sunday, leading to Washington’s fifth straight loss, Mike Shanahan has decided to make a change at the quarterback position in D.C. Second-year quarterback Kirk Cousins will start for the Redskins on Sunday in Atlanta, replacing Robert Griffin III, according to the NFL Network.
Cousins, who was drafted in the fourth round in 2012, played in three games (starting one) for the Redskins as a rookie, replacing Griffin while he dealt with a leg injury and leading Washington to a 38-21 win against the Browns in Week 15. He also finished the Redskins’ playoff loss to the Seahawks in the wild-card round last season, filling in after Griffin left with what turned out to be a torn ACL. Cousins has played in two games this season, including the end of the Chiefs game on Sunday, completing 12 of 25 passes for 107 yards and throwing two interceptions.
Griffin hasn’t enjoyed much better results this season, completing 60 percent of his passes and tossing 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, which is high compared to the mere five picks he threw in all of 2012. His surgically repaired knee appears to be impacting his play, and Shanahan’s decision has been rumored to be in the best interest of Griffin’s health heading into next season.
Washington is just 3-10 on the season, eliminating the Skins from playoff contention already and giving Shanahan all the more reason to make the switch.
