Deron WilliamsAt some point, the Rockets should just call the Heat and offer to trade Omer Asik for LeBron James. Because, why not?

Houston’s desperate attempts to trade its backup center fell short last week when a reported deal with the Celtics never came to fruition. But the trade market for Asik might have jumped the shark before that. The Rockets and Nets engaged in “preliminary talks” about swapping Asik and Jeremy Lin for Deron Williams, ESPN.com reports.

The Nets, not surprisingly, “balked,” according to Ohm Youngmisuk.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey pulled off a couple of coups in the last two offseasons, nabbing James Harden and Dwight Howard to transform Houston into a Western Conference title contender. Before bringing in Howard this summer, though, he signed Asik to a three-year deal in 2012 to bolster the back line of the Rockets’ defense.

Asik performed well in his one season as a starter, but has become extraneous with Howard’s arrival. The 27-year-old Turkish big man has grown disillusioned with his playing time and has requested a trade, which the Rockets have made every attempt to fulfill.

And by “every” attempt, we mean every attempt — no matter how far outside the bounds of reality.
