Rex RyanThe Jets have been much better than anticipated this season, but Rex Ryan still appears to be on the way out.

Ryan has somehow led an offensively anemic Jets team to a 6-8 record heading into Week 16, but apparently that isn’t good enough for the front-office in Florham Park, N.J. Ryan told his players in a meeting on Saturday night that he was getting fired, FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer reported on Sunday morning.

“Guys, word on the street is that I’m getting fired. I’m not coming back,” Ryan told his team, according to Glazer.

Ryan, who is in his fifth season with the Jets, has been in the hot seat all season. New general manager Josh Idzik reportedly wanted to start fresh with a new head coach upon taking over during the offseason, but Jets owner Woody Johnson was adamant about giving Ryan one more season to turn things around.

The Jets were predicted to finish last in the AFC East and weren’t expected to win more than a few games after trading away Darrelle Revis during the offseason and deciding to start rookie Geno Smith at quarterback. However, Ryan had the Jets in the thick of the playoff picture for much of the season and could even finish the year at .500, which wasn’t even a consideration by many entering this season.
