The bullying scandal in Miami has left more than a massive smudge on the Dolphins’ reputation, it’s also ended two players’ tenures with the team.
Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin have both played their last games with the Dolphins, according to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald. Neither player has suited up for the Dolphins in quite some time — Martin since Week 8 in New England and Incognito since a game against the Bengals in Week 9 — and Salguero says they won’t again.
Incognito and Martin were wrapped up in a bullying scandal earlier this season, which centered around accusations that Incognito left Martin threatening and racially charged messages on his phone. Martin decided to leave the team ahead of the team’s Week 9 game, following an upsetting incident with teammates.
Incognito was suspended by the team a few days later for what was deemed “conduct detrimental to the team.” His suspension was originally supposed to end in Week 14, but he has reportedly agreed to extend that suspension through the end of the season, with pay. There will be no supplemental punishment enforced by the NFL for his involvement, per the agreement.
It was reported that Incognito likely played his final game with the team following his suspension, but Martin was thought to have at least a chance to return. That thought is now defunct as Salguero reports that the Dolphins’ locker room would no longer be a suitable place for Martin, and the 2012 second-round pick will likely be traded during the offseason.
Incognito will be a free agent this offseason.
