This is getting messy.
According to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, talks between the Seattle Mariners and Robinson Cano are still alive.
The Mariners reportedly were willing to offer Cano a nine-year, $225 million contract until Seattle apparently broke off talks due to “excessive demands” made by the second baseman’s agent, Jay Z. This initially created a sense that the Mariners were out of the mix for Cano, but Rosenthal’s report shows that the book might not be completely closed.
Mariners CEO Howard Lincoln “exploded” when Cano’s representatives demanded a 10th year, according to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News. That obviously means that the two sides will need to smooth things over before a potential deal can be consummated.
If the Mariners pull out of the Cano sweepstakes, it’ll leave the Yankees in a good position to re-sign the five-time All-Star, as it doesn’t appear that too many suitors have emerged. However, New York, according to Feinsand, is unwilling to enter the $200 million range. The Yankees reportedly are willing to go as high as $175 million over seven years.
