The Yankees saved a whole bunch of cash by not re-signing Robinson Cano. It’s time to spend it.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Yankees say that they’re “in on everyone” now that Cano has signed with the Mariners on a deal reportedly worth $240 million over 10 years. Nightengale lists Shin-Soo Choo, Carlos Beltran, Stephen Drew and Omar Infante as potential targets.
The Yankees have been aggressive this offseason, signing Jacoby Ellsbury (seven years, $153 million) and Brian McCann (five years, $85 million) in addition to trying to re-sign Cano. Now that Cano is heading out west, it makes sense that New York could shift its attention toward other free agents and continue the winter shopping spree.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has expressed a desire to remain under the $189 million luxury tax threshold for 2014 — something that became much easier with Cano signing elsewhere. But the Yankees are the Yankees, and it doesn’t sound as if they’re steadfast on accomplishing that goal in lieu of adding premium talent.
