FOXBORO, Mass. — It’s official. Rob Gronkowski‘s season is over.
The Patriots placed their All-Pro tight end on season-ending injured reserve on Monday. They also officially announced the signing of D.J. Williams, who the team cut on Wednesday after Michael Hoomanawanui had returned to practice.
Gronkowski tore his ACL and MCL on Sunday when Browns safety T.J. Ward hit the tight end directly in the knee. Gronkowski also suffered a concussion on the play.
Gronkowski played just seven games this season. He caught 39 passes for 592 yards and four Gronk spikes touchdowns.
Despite missing so many games, Gronkowski ranks 10th among tight ends in yards and 13th in touchdowns.
Williams has played with the Packers and Jaguars during his three-year career. He won the John Mackey Award for best college tight end in 2010 when Patriots backup Ryan Mallett was his quarterback at Arkansas.
