Sandro’s Stunning Long-Range Goal Against Manchester United Ends Year-Long Goal Drought (GIF)

SandroIt’s a shame Sandro didn’t have much time to revel in the goal he scored against Manchester United. He doesn’t score often, and it was one worth savoring.

The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder scored a stunning, long-range goal to give his team a short-lived lead in a marquee Premier League contest on Sunday. Unfortunately for Sandro and Spurs, Wayne Rooney converted a penalty kick just three minutes later to level the score.  Sandro’s strike was one of the best goals of the 2013-14 Premier League season and would have been a worthy game-winner had Tottenham held onto the lead.

The score was tied at 1-1 in the 57th minute when Sandro surprised everyone. He dribbled around Tom Cleverley to create some space and fired a shot from 25 yards out. The powerfully hit shot curled into the top corner, and there was nothing United goalkeeper David de Gea could do to stop it. Sandro’s screamer came exactly one year after he had last scored.

The Brazilian is a defensive midfielder by trade, so Tottenham’s embattled manager Andre Villas-Boas doesn’t expect him to score too often. But Sandro can also surprise, as we saw when he led Brazil’s Olympic soccer team in song at the Olympic village in London in 2012. Maybe Sandro should consider stepping out of character more often since he’s capable of hitting shots like this.
