San Jose Sharks rookie phenom Tomas Hertl is going to have knee surgery and will miss more than a month before returning to the lineup.

Hertl’s injury occurred last Thursday when he was kneed by Los Angeles Kings captain Dustin Brown. A replay of the hit can be seen in the video below.
The former first-round draft pick has been one of the NHL’s most exciting players this season and leads all rookies in goals scored (15) and scoring (25 points). He’s a major reason why the Sharks rank fourth in the league in goals scored and have an impressive 22-8-6 record through 36 games.
Hertl’s surgery also has the potential to impact his status for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Based on his stellar performance this season, he was expected to be a top-six forward for the Czech Republic.
