Tony Romo Undergoes Season-Ending Back Surgery; Kyle Orton Will Start for Cowboys on Sunday

Tony RomoTony Romo‘s season is over.

After initially choosing not to reveal details of his quarterback’s status, Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett confirmed Friday that Romo underwent back surgery earlier that morning. Tomo will miss Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles and any potential playoff games.

The Cowboys instead will start Kyle Orton, who has attempted just five passes this season. Orton’s last season as a full-time starter came in 2010, when he threw for 3,653 yards and 20 touchdowns with nine interceptions for a 4-12 Denver Broncos team.

Jon Kitna, who was signed out of retirement earlier this week, will be Orton’s backup.

Sunday night’s Cowboys-Eagles game will serve as the de facto NFC East championship game. The winning team will claim the division title and advance to the playoffs, and the loser will be eliminated from contention.
