Victor Cruz honored one of his heroes on Sunday afternoon with a special message that he scrawled onto his cleats.

Just one day after the one-year anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, Cruz paid tribute to Jack Pinto, a 6-year-old who was one of the 20 children killed in the tragedy. Over the past year, Cruz has formed a bond with the Pinto family, as he was incredibly touched that Jack — a huge Giants fan and an even bigger Cruz fan — was buried in a replica of the wide receiver’s jersey.

In New York’s first game after the school shooting last season, Cruz honored Jack with a message on his cleats and his gloves, recognizing the 6-year-old as “my hero.” Soon after that game, Cruz and some teammates made a trip to Newton, Conn., where he visited with Pinto’s family. The strong connection that he has forged with the Pintos, and especially Jack, was revealed once again on Sunday when the Giants took on the Seahawks.

Check out Cruz’s remarkable gesture in the photo that he posted to Instagram below.
