Houston Texans coach Wade Phillips speculated after Sunday’s loss to the Denver Broncos that Peyton Manning‘s second touchdown pass to Eric Decker might not have been a clean catch.
Apparently, the NFL agrees with him.
Phillips said Friday that the league informed him this week that the touchdown — Manning’s 50th of the year, tying him with Tom Brady for the single-season record — should not have counted because Decker was juggling the ball as he went out of bounds.
“Poor Manning,” Phillips told reporters, via ESPN.com, in one last jab at the quarterback. “He thought he broke the record.”
The score, which was reviewed and upheld, gave Denver a 30-13 lead midway through the fourth quarter. Manning tossed another touchdown pass less than three minutes later, this one to tight end Julius Thomas, to surpass Brady’s mark.
